| Visitors to the new Health Care for the Homeless clinic and headquarters at 421 Fallsway are struck by the light. Natural daylight streams through glass doors, ribbon windows, and a central clerestory window to brighten internal waiting areas, offices, and corridors. It’s an illuminating contrast from the nonprofit health care organization’s old digs in a dark and dilapidated former train station and bank at 111 Park Avenue – a space HCH had outgrown after 18 years of occupancy. Brilliant patches of color dot the floors and hallways of the new clinic, and art created by HCH clients decorates the walls. Construction wrapped up in January of 2010, and HCH began operating in the new facility on February 1. |

Nearly triple the size of the previous facility, the new environmentally-sustainable building allows HCH to expand existing services – medical care, mental health services, social work and case management, addiction treatment, outreach, and special programs while also developing new resources. New HCH Services & Activities:
Planners, architects, and builders worked between 2004 and 2010 to design a facility that promotes energy-efficiency, the delivery of interdisciplinary services, and the overall health and wellbeing of staff, clients, and visitors. Paints and natural surfaces free from harmful chemicals along with Ultra-Violet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) in the heating and cooling system promote internal air quality. To foster internal referrals and collaboration, most clinical services for adults are located on a single floor. Energy-efficient systems reduce projected electricity costs by at least 40%. Currently accommodating more than 140 staff members, the new building has ample room for future growth – including an unfinished portion of the third floor.
