Capital Campaign

Visitors to the new Health Care for the Homeless clinic and headquarters at 421 Fallsway are struck by the light. Natural daylight streams through glass doors, ribbon windows, and a central clerestory window to brighten internal waiting areas, offices, and corridors. It’s an illuminating contrast from the nonprofit health care organization’s old digs in a dark and dilapidated former train station and bank at 111 Park Avenue – a space HCH had outgrown after 18 years of occupancy. Brilliant patches of color dot the floors and hallways of the new clinic, and art created by HCH clients decorates the walls. Construction wrapped up in January of 2010, and HCH began operating in the new facility on February 1.

Nearly triple the size of the previous facility, the new environmentally-sustainable building allows HCH to expand existing services – medical care, mental health services, social work and case management, addiction treatment, outreach, and special programs while also developing new resources.

New HCH Services & Activities:

  • Maryland’s first dental program for homeless children and adults:  Preventive and restorative dental care is extremely limited for people experiencing homelessness.  Our new three-chair dental suite – to open this summer – includes digital x-ray capacity and a fully-equipped lab.

  • CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield Pediatric Clinic at HCH:  Building upon our Children’s Health Outreach Project, the new clinic will provide comprehensive health care services to children.

  • Vision Suite:  Thanks to a generous contribution from our partners at the Maryland Society for Sight, volunteer specialists now conduct vision screening in new dedicated space.

  • Mt. Vernon Pharmacy at The Fallsway:  Following a long-term collaboration, independent pharmacist Stephen Wienner will open an onsite satellite pharmacy in late-summer or early-fall to serve HCH clients and the surrounding community.

Planners, architects, and builders worked between 2004 and 2010 to design a facility that promotes energy-efficiency, the delivery of interdisciplinary services, and the overall health and wellbeing of staff, clients, and visitors. Paints and natural surfaces free from harmful chemicals along with Ultra-Violet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI) in the heating and cooling system promote internal air quality. To foster internal referrals and collaboration, most clinical services for adults are located on a single floor. Energy-efficient systems reduce projected electricity costs by at least 40%. Currently accommodating more than 140 staff members, the new building has ample room for future growth – including an unfinished portion of the third floor.

The new home of HCH is made possible by a broad public-private partnership with substantial contributions from federal, state, and local levels of government; private foundations led by the Harry & Jeannette Weinberg Foundation (for whom the building is named), committed corporation partners; and many caring individuals helping us build a future without homelessness.

Contributions are still being sought to establish a facility maintenance fund. HCH appreciates the hundreds of community partners who enhanced our ability to build a future without homelessness.
