Client Demographics

Last year, Health Care for the Homeless provided comprehensive services during more than 74,000 patient visits at clinic sites in Baltimore City and Frederick, Montgomery, Harford, and Baltimore Counties to 12,000 individuals experiencing homelessness.

Who is Homeless?  The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services defines homelessness to include individuals and families living on the streets, in shelters and transitional housing, and temporarily "doubled up" with friends, neighbors, or relatives.  HCH is also authorized to serve individuals and families for twelve months after they have secured permanent housing.

Race & Ethnicity:  In 2009, 62% of HCH clients statewide identified as black or African American, 26% as white or Caucasian, and 6% as Hispanic or Latino.  In Baltimore City, 77% were black or African American, 18% white or Caucasian, and 3% Hispanic or Latino. 

Gender:  Statewide, 64% of HCH clients in 2009 were male; 36% were female.  In Baltimore, 71% were male and 29% were female.

Age:  Statewide, 6.6% of HCH clients in 2009 were under the age of 19.  85.5% were between the ages of 25 and 64.  In Baltimore, 93% of HCH clients were between the ages of 25 and 64.   

Residential Status:  Statewide, 48% of HCH clients reported living in emergency and transitional shelter when we met them in 2009, 28% were “doubled up,” and 10% reported living on the street.  In Baltimore, 49% lived in shelters, 28% were “doubled up,” and 10% lived on the street. 

Insurance Status:  Statewide, 20% of HCH clients received Medicaid in 2009, 4% were enrolled in Medicare, and 76% were uninsured.  In Baltimore, 19% received Medicaid, 6% received Medicare, and 75% were uninsured.
