Eviction Prevention Resources

08.30.21

25,000 families in Baltimore City are now at risk of eviction, following the U.S. Supreme Court decision to strike down the CDC's eviction moratorium. Statewide, it's 129,000 families.

Below are resources and information we've compiled—from a new rental assistance dashboard to state rent relief programs—and steps to advocate for eviction prevention in the midst of the pandemic.

Emergency Rental Assistance in Maryland

  • Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development launched a dashboard which shows statewide progress to distribute Emergency Rental Assistance Program funding. The dashboard includes assistance overall, tenant demographics, and program outreach. The department is administering $258 million in rental assistance. The eight largest jurisdictions have an additional $143 million to get out to Marylanders. Read more here.
  • Here is a link to Maryland Courts information for renters and landlords which was updated August 4 by Chief Judge Morrissey.
  • A list of Maryland Rent Relief programs can be found here.
  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau announced this new tool: www.consumerfinance.gov/renthelp

More COVID Resources

Johns Hopkins has prepared a set of COVID-19 community ‘tool-box’ resources with information covering a range of issues or needs related to the pandemic, in both English and Spanish.

Contact your elected officials

There are four main ways you can advocate for eviction prevention and protection:

  • Call for Congress to extend the CDC Order.
  • Urge Governor Hogan to extend state protections. The Governor can issue an order pausing evictions when a rental assistance application has been filed.
  • Ask the Maryland General Assembly to call a special session to address eviction prevention and rent relief.
  • Fund the Access to Counsel initiative passed by the General Assembly earlier this year.
