MEDICAID: A nutty week in Washington (03/29/17)

03.29.17

The last few weeks have been quite a swirl in Washington, D.C., with the American Health Care Act (AHCA) dominating national news. The proposed new law would have ended Medicaid expansion and changed the program in many ways that would have been harmful for low-income people and the providers who serve them. Fortunately, there was enough opposition to these changes that the bill never even came up for a vote and was withdrawn—even after the President pushed hard to get it to pass. Now, it is unclear what will happen next. We don’t know whether Congress and the President will move on to another issue, or continue to debate health care. Some members of Congress are talking about introducing a single payer/Medicare for All solution, but others are talking about reviving the more conservative approaches that the AHCA contained. The National Health Care for the Homeless Council will be publishing its monthly Mobilizer on Thursday, March 30 (sign up here), which will contain an updated post-election frequently asked questions (FAQ) that explains more about what’s happening at the federal level on health and housing. If you have questions, don’t hesitate to contact Barbara DiPietro or Regina Reed for more information!
