By Kevin Lindamood, President & CEO
When I accepted the position of President & CEO ten years ago, I was not expecting to build affordable housing. But the truth is clear: People need housing to be healthy and that housing simply doesn’t exist in our community.
So we educated ourselves. We planned. We created new partnerships. And today we are affordable husing providers in Baltimore.
"The rent is just too high," clients tell us. In fact, just 25% of families who need housing can get it. And only 10% of those we care for can afford it.
Black neighbors who bear the outsized burden of decades of unjust housing policies have been urgently calling for quality, affordable homes on their blocks.
It is shameful that we have not listened. It is shameful that we have not acted. The repercussions of our collective inaction are crystal clear: Thousands of people come to us for health care. Even worse: People die on our streets.
We broke ground just a few weeks ago on Sojourner Place at Oliver, a new development with 70 new apartments, 50% of which are for people exiting homelessness. We are doing this work in close partnership with Episcopal Housing Corporation and the residents of the Oliver community.
Each new apartment building will have our staff on-site to support residents. And each projet will be imagined and built in partnership with the community in which it stands.
