On April 22, 2024, the Supreme Court heard oral testimony in the case of Johnson vs. Grants Pass, which could allow states to punish people for things like sleeping outside with a pillow or blanket. Over 700 people turned out in front of the courthouse steps to say: people experiencing homelessness need housing, not handcuffs!
Staff, clients, and community members from Health Care for the Homeless were able to attend with the support of organizations like the National Coalition for the Homeless. We represented Baltimore alongside folks from Housing Our Neighbors, the Youth Empowerment Society, students from University of Maryland, Baltimore, and more.
