Our new director of adult medicine...

Please welcome Health Care for the Homeless nurse practitioner Laura Garcia to her new role: director of adult medicine.

"Laura brings a thorough understanding of the medical clinic at Health Care for the Homeless, with its strengths and challenges," says Vice President of Medicine Adrienne Trustman. "She is calm, thoughtful and focused in her approach to solving problems, communicating with her team and in her interactions with other Health Care for the Homeless teams. She has a clear vision of integrated care and has been instrumental in piloting and refining the work of care teams."

Laura came to Health Care for the Homeless two years ago from Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, where she was a registered nurse and charge nurse for four years on the Progressive Care Unit. She completed her training as a Family Nurse Practitioner at Johns Hopkins University in May, 2014 and joined us in August, 2014 as a primary care provider for adults and children. She decided to become a nurse while serving as a Peace Corps public health volunteer in Morocco.

"I love working with such a dedicated and passionate group of people at Health Care for the Homeless, and serving patients who overall, despite the incredibly difficult situations confronting them, continue to persevere and have hope," Laura says.

In her new role, says Adrienne, Laura's "initial focus (as prioritized by our medical provider team) will be to work with Cyndy Singletary, our director of nursing, and her team to improve, standardize and refine medical clinic roles and workflows. Laura plans to lead her team using a servant leadership model with an emphasis on collaboration to improve patient care."

"I look forward to fostering team growth and interdisciplinary communication to help facilitate the evolution of our patient-centered medical home and, ultimately, to improve delivery of services to our patients," Laura says.

Best wishes to you, Laura!
