3 ways to keep neighbors safe and warm this winter

12.20.21

Baltimore gets dangerously cold, and too many of our neighbors are out there.

Want to help, but don’t know how? Here are three simple things you can do to make a difference in someone’s life this winter.

1. Keep up with Code Blue Alerts

When winter weather poses a threat to the life or health of residents, the Health Commissioner declares a Code Blue. During a Code Blue, warming centers and additional emergency shelters open for those without a safe place to stay.

2. Know who to call for help

if you see someone in need of shelter, Call:

  • 443-984-9540: The Mayor's Office of Homeless Services will connect individuals with emergency shelter.
  • 211: Operators will provide shelter locations and safety tips during Code Blues.
  • 911: Call for medical attention in case of a weather-related emergency

3. Carry or donate winter essentials

giving an extra snack or a warm scarf makes a night on the street a bit more manageable.
