National Indigenous People's Day 2023

10.04.23

On October 9, 2023, the United States will celebrate Indigenous Peoples Day for the third consecutive year, in conjunction with Columbus Day.

Although it is not yet a national holiday the Indigenous Peoples' Day Act, which was reintroduced to Congress on October 2, 2023, proposes for the second Monday of October to be designated as Indigenous Peoples' Day nationwide. Explore a few ways you can commemorate Indigenous Peoples Day in 2023 below.

White House Proclamation

October 8, 2021

“On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, we honor the sovereignty, resilience, and immense contributions that Native Americans have made to the world; and we recommit to upholding our solemn trust and treaty responsibilities to Tribal Nations, strengthening our Nation-to-Nation ties.”

Indigenous Peoples Day and Hispanic Heritage Month Connection

Indigenous Peoples Day and Hispanic Heritage Month occur simultaneously; however, Hispanic Heritage Month has historically failed to celebrate the diverse Indigenous heritage of Hispanic/Latine people. The terms “Hispanic” and “Latino” envelop several different cultures, races, languages, and countries of origin, which creates a Eurocentric lens that erases Indigenous Hispanic/Latine perspectives. Explore some of the resources below that take a closer look at the Indigenous roots of Hispanic/Latine culture.
